Water Restrictions - Exemptions update

Hi all,

The following is an update on Water Restriction “exemptions” that Hunter Water have approved for Council.

Exemptions already in place are:

  • the operation of central irrigation systems under a specific schedule which is controlled by Council Officers.
  • Cricket Wickets - Manual sprinklers can be used before 10 am and or after 4 pm for a maximum duration of two hours per wicket square up to a maximum of two times per week. The sprinklers must have a timer installed or be under supervision, ie. not left unattended.
  • Croquet Courts - before 10 am and or after 4 pm for a maximum duration of one hour per green up to a maximum of two times per week The sprinklers must have a timer installed or be under supervision. ie. not left unattended.

New exemption that Council has negotiated is as follows:

  • Use of manual sprinklerscan occur under level 1 restrictions under the following circumstances. Goal mouth/area in front of goals and centre area of playing field - for a maximum duration of two hours per site up to a maximum of two times per week before 10 am and or after 4 pm only if they are controlled by timers and or not left unattended – that means the person responsible for turning the sprinkler on does not leave the facility.

Delegated authorities and ground curators need to be mindful that Hunter Water Compliance officers are policing these exemptions and expect Council staff and delegated authorities to adhere to these guidelines.

Any facility operating outside these parameters places the current exemption for their site and all other sites at risk.

There is no guarantee that any of the above exemptions will apply if Levels are increased, a good record under Level 1 is essential if Council is to be successful in retaining any access to mains watering of sporting fields under higher levels of water restriction.

Council urges all delegated authorities to take the exemption criteria seriously as failure to do so will have implications for not only our sporting fields but the general Community as well.
